Ceramics: Advanced Wheel Throwing (6 Week Course) w/ Gregg

This six-session course is designed for students who already have a foundation in basic wheel throwing and are ready to refine their skills through more advanced techniques. Each session focuses on a specific skill set, combining instructor demonstrations with guided, hands-on practice. *This course requires a minimum enrollment of three students to run. If fewer than three students are registered, the course will be rescheduled.*

By the end of this course, students will:

• Strengthen technical control and confidence at the wheel

• Develop more advanced throwing and trimming skills

• Learn strategies for working at larger scales and with complex forms

• Expand their ability to independently plan and execute ceramic projects

Each class session follows a consistent structure:

1. Lesson Introduction – Overview of the day’s skill or technique, supported by examples of the instructor’s work

2. Discussion & Q&A – Opportunity for students to ask clarifying questions

3. Instructor Demonstration – Step-by-step demonstration of the technique

4. Hands-On Practice – Students apply the lesson while the instructor circulates to provide individualized feedback and guidance

Weekly Breakdown

Week 1 (3/15/26)

• Throwing a round-bodied pot with a narrow neck
  Using a chuck to trim difficult forms

Week 2 (3/22/26)

• Throwing three forms off a minimum 10-lb hump

Week 3 (3/29/26)

• Creating three pots, each with a different lid style

Skip week for Easter Holiday

Week 4 (4/12/26)

• Constructing a teapot with two matching teacups

Week 5 (4/19/26)

• Combining two separately thrown pieces (minimum 6 lbs each) into a single form

Skip Week 

• No class session

• All pieces will be bisque fired and prepared for glazing

Week 6 (5/3/26)

• Glazing finished work from previous sessions

Meet Your Instructor

Gregg Willman, has over 50 years experience in various media with a strong emphasis in ceramic arts. He has worked as both a production potter as well as a studio artist. He has taught, and continues to teach, various ceramic classes from wheel throwing to various firing techniques. In addition to teaching, Gregg has been represented by galleries in Corpus Christi, San Antonio, Houston, and has a piece in the permanent collection of the Art Museum of South Texas.
