This class focuses on teaching the basic skills needed to safely use the metal lathe.

Description

One of our metal shop founders likes to say that "with the metal mill and lathe, you could rebuild the entire world". The lathe is your tool of choice for anything cylindrical in shape.

This class focuses on teaching the basic skills needed to safely use the metal lathe. We will focus on safety throughout the class. Each student will create a general use handle (which they can keep), during which they will learn facing (flattening the end), turning (cutting down the sides), knurling (making a rough surface to grip more easily), and drilling and tapping (creating threaded holes). The students will also learn about the various parts of the lathe and about the available tooling and their uses.
