Cutting Board Build w/ Joseph

In this class you will BUILD your very own custom designed cutting board by using two different wood species - Hard Maple and Sapele. 

COST: $100 (All materials and lumber included!  The only thing you need to do is show up!)

You will LEARN:

• The most important foundational planning, design, fabrication and finishing techniques used in the making of a cutting board which include:
  • Learning why everyone needs to know how to build a cutting board and why it is one of the most fun, practical and easiest things to build!
  • Learning about wood properties - (structure, hardness, end grain versus side grain versus face grain etc.)
  • Mathematically calculating the correct amount of materials needed so as to save on waste - (which is saving on money and time and frustration!)
  • Designing a cutting board using multiple colors of wood species - using the correct size and proportion ratios - (the golden ratio, using the correct and complimenting colors to achieve the best esthetically pleasing design possible.)
  • The correct and SAFE use of the machinery and techniques used in milling of the lumber - (jointing, planing, cutting very narrow pieces safely and accurately on a table saw, drum sanding, routing edge profiles, juice grooves and handle recesses safely and accurately) 
  • Gluing up and clamping multiple strips of wood quickly and accurately.  
  • How to properly finish a cutting board - (correct hand sanding techniques and grits, treating your board with mineral oil and final buffing with bees wax.)

All materials will be provided and are included in the cost. 

You are welcome to bring your own safety glasses and hearing protection. If not, they will be provided. 

Class will be 3 hours long (with a 10 minute bathroom and snack break midway through)
