Advanced MIG Welding w/ Savanna

04/11/2026 09:30 AM - 12:30 PM CT

Admission

  • $180.00

Location

Austin, TX

Summary

Take your welding skills further with this project-based class designed for students who have completed Intro to MIG Welding and Metal Shop Safety (or have previous basic welding experience). In this workshop, you’ll practice running weld beads in the four fundamental welding positions (flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead) while using tools from both the metal shop and welding area such as the cold saw, plasma cutter, belt sander, angle grinders, and MIG welders.

By the end of the class you’ll create a unique “metal log” made from layered practice beads that showcase your welds in each position. Students are encouraged to continue adding beads and refining their project during open shop time.

Learning Objectives

  • Safely operate welding equipment and supporting tools in the metal shop, including the MIG welder, cold saw, plasma cutter, belt sander, and angle grinder.

  • Demonstrate proper shop safety procedures and PPE use in the welding and metal fabrication areas.

  • Prepare and fabricate a simple welded project using cutting, fitting, and grinding techniques.

  • Set up and adjust a MIG welder to run practice beads with appropriate voltage and wire feed speed settings.

  • Perform MIG welds in the four fundamental welding positions: flat, horizontal, vertical (up and down), and overhead.

  • Use welding arms, clamps, and positioning tools to place workpieces for out-of-position welding practice.

  • Evaluate weld bead appearance and make adjustments to technique or machine settings to improve weld quality.

  • Complete a “metal log” project that showcases practice beads in multiple welding positions and demonstrates progression of skill.
