Summary

Students will learn basic skills for safely using the router table. We will emphasize making safe and precise cuts using straight bits, pattern bits, rabbeting bits, and round-over bits. We will also teach techniques for avoiding tear-out, the most common routing problem. By the end of the class, the students will have created all the pieces needed to make a simple carrying tray.

Description

The router table is one of the most intimidating machines in the woodshop to new users. This class will help students become comfortable with using the router table by teaching them basic skills and router bit-specific operations during the creation of a small tray project they can then take home.

We will demonstrate the use of straight bits, with an emphasis on setting up precise and safe cuts. We will learn techniques for avoiding tear-out, the most common cause of poor cuts and damaged pieces. The class will also cover the use of flush trim bits, rabbeting bits, and round-over bits during this project, some of the most commonly used router bits.

Students will end the class by assembling all the routed pieces into a utilitarian serving/carrying tray with hand holds, 19" x 15" x 3 1/4". The teacher will also demonstrate basic techniques for gluing the tray together, although this isn't the focus of the class. Students who are asmbly members can do the final assembly of the project hemselves later. Non-members can complete the project, with a slight modification, immediately after class.
